Recognition of ECSA-accredited Programmes by Signatories of International Educational Agreements

This page gives information on educational programmes that are accredited by ECSA that signatories of the following international educational agreements have agreed to recognise:

Recognition[SN1]  of BEng, BSc(Eng) and BIng Programmes Accredited by ECSA via Washington Accord
This type of programme is a four-year programme.

Engineering programmes listed in document E-20-PE have been accredited by ECSA and are recognised as meeting the initial academic requirements for registration as a Professional Engineer in South Africa. International recognition of these programmes is provided through the Washington Accord, which was signed in 1989.

Signatories to the Washington Accord have undertaken to make every reasonable effort to ensure that the bodies responsible or registering or licensing for Professional Engineer, Chartered Engineer or similar designations to practise in its country or territory mutually recognise the substantial academic equivalence of engineering academic programmes accredited by other Accord signatories.

ECSA became a signatory to the Washington Accord in 1999 and other signatories are under no formal obligation to recognise the graduates of accredited programmes prior to that year. Individual Accord signatories recognise ECSA accredited programmes gained prior to1999 at their own discretion.

Further details about the Washington Accord and details of all current signatories with links to all accreditation listing information can be found at: http://www.ieagreements.org/

Recognition of BTech Programmes Accredited by ECSA via Sydney Accord
The BTech programme is a one-year programme undertaken after completing an accredited National Diploma. The combination is the benchmark educational qualification required for registration as a Professional Engineering Technologist with ECSA.

Engineering programmes listed in document E-20-PT have been accredited by ECSA and are recognised as meeting the initial academic requirements for registration as a Professional Engineering Technologist in South Africa. Signatories are advised that accreditation of BTech programmes by ECSA is subject to an approriate choice of subjects by the student in each case. Signatories considering holders of BTech degrees for recognition under the Sydney Accord are advised to obtain confirmation from the ECSA Education Manager that the applicant’s degree contains an appropriate combination of subjects.
ECSA was a founding signatory to the Sydney Accord in 2001 and other signatories are under no formal obligation to recognise the graduates of accredited programmes prior to that year. Individual Accord signatories recognise ECSA accredited programmes gained prior to 2001 at their own discretion.
